How can reconciliation work?

How can reconciliation succeed in the context of colonial injustice? The joint declaration on the genocide of the Nama and Herero people by German colonial troops in present-day Namibia is being critically discussed. Coming to terms with colonial injustice must involve the affected communities, and it is essential to begin listening to one another, understanding each other, and encountering one another as human beings.

“Who has the pleasure of forgetting and who bears the burden of remembering?” asked Namibian spoken word artist Keith Black on September 22, 2022, at the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Berlin. Also participating in the panel discussion were Uhuru Dempers, an activist from Namibia; former German Minister of Justice Herta Däubler-Gmelin; Reinhardt Kößler, a sociologist; Benjamin Sadler from the German-Namibian educational initiative Welwitschia e.V.; and other guests.
