Masculinities: Liberation Through Photography
Masculinities
What do I understand by masculinity?
What can, what is allowed, what should masculinity be?
What will masculinity of the future look like?
These and other questions about masculinities were explored by 14- to 18-year-old students from Campus Rütli School, Beethoven Gymnasium, and the Gropius Bau youth center in workshops held in the lead-up to the exhibition “Masculinities: Liberation Through Photography” (October 16, 2020 to January 10, 2021) at the Gropius Bau. The workshops took place before the exhibition and were led by experts who shared insights into their lived experiences.
What societal pressures and expectations exist, and what are one's own ideas about masculinity? How does one deal with emotions? Traits like strength, courage, self-confidence, and fearlessness are commonly attributed to men. If someone perceived as masculine behaves in a feminine way, they face criticism. Young people, in particular, live in this reality and are confronted with societal norms. Together with the workshop leaders from Ephra, gender roles were questioned and power dynamics explored.
The results of the workshops were collected by Ephra and captured by me in a graphic recording. Visitors to the exhibition at the Gropius Bau (30,000 copies printed, in German and English) could take the poster home free of charge.
Note: Due to the current lockdown, the posters can be ordered free of charge (postage only) from the Gropius Bau webshop.
